James Matthews

James Matthews is Sky News' Scotland Correspondent, based in the Edinburgh bureau. James joined Sky News in 1994 and since then has reported from around the United Kingdom and abroad.

 

In 2009 he reported on the story of the impending release of the Lockerbie bomber and interviewed the son of Colonel Gaddafi in Tipoli. James was also part of the Bafta winning team for Sky News' coverage of the Glasgow Airport terror attack.

Other assignments have included reporting from HMS Invincible (during heightened tensions in the Gulf), from NATO in Brussels during the Kosovo conflict, and from France, where he covered the Scottish football team's 1998 World Cup campaign.

During the war in Afghanistan he reported from the US Aircraft Carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt as it launched attacks on enemy positions. He twice conducted exclusive interviews with the former Libyan leader Colonel Gaddaffi, once on the eve of the Lockerbie Trial.

James counts one of his career highlights as covering the opening of the Scottish Parliament 1999 - the first for 300 years. He was later on hand as the Queen officially opened the new, controversial parliament building at Holyrood.

James has broken a string of important news stories north of the border. He conducted an exclusive interview with Luke Mitchell, the boyfriend and killer of Jodi Jones. The interview was subsequently broadcast to the jury during Mitchell's murder trial.

Before coming to Sky News, James was Chief Reporter for Scottish Television, Edinburgh. He began his career at Metro Radio in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, where he was news and sports reporter. After two years he joined Independent Radio News (IRN), and was based in London. As war correspondent he covered the first Gulf War, advancing with British Troops into Kuwait City. 

Born in Musselburgh, East Lothian, James grew up in Edinburgh, where he was educated at Holy Rood High School. He read French at Stirling University, followed by a year at the London College of Printing, studying Radio Journalism.
